Looking for suggestions on single speed e-bike conversion

[ad_1]

I’m very new to the whole world of e-bikes but I’ve recently become interested in the idea of converting my single speed road bike into one as I would like to use it to commute to and from work more often but my area is just too hilly and hot to do it without being a sweaty mess by the time I arrive.

My commute is just under 2 miles each direction, and as I mentioned, mildly hilly, though nothing insane in terms of grade, so I don’t think that would be a massive worry on the motor. I would also foresee myself most likely wanting to ride with an assistive mode as much as possible rather than on full electric power.

So my question is: for those who have experience with conversion kits, and especially on single speed bikes, is there any recommendations you can make for me? Hub motor vs. mid, what power wattage I should get, etc.? Something as low-profile and weight as possible would be my ideal set up.

For reference, the bike I have is the Fuji Declaration (It says fixie on the site. But it is a switchable hub and I ride it as a freewheel.) https://www.citygrounds.com/products/fuji-18?variant=32133647564911

  1. If you can manage it on your current bike without having to worry about changing gears, then you should be able to do it on a hub motor. Personally I’d suggest a front wheel motor kit to balance out the weight a bit more (rider and battery at the rear end) purely down to the fact that you’re more likely to get punctures on the rear tyre, and taking off a rear wheel with a hub motor is more of a faff with the chain and torque arms and so on than it would be to do it on the front. I had a front hub motor before switching to mid drive and I had one front tyre puncture compared to well over a dozen, maybe even two dozen, on the rear in the time I was using it.
