My ears were freezing, so I got a different beanie. Story/review.

I bought the [Rockbros [ebay]](https://www.ebay.com/itm/175084659017) cold weather beanie and tried it out and absolutely loved it. I was wearing a normal type of fleece beanie and it would always slide over my eyes, and just open the flaps to funnel cold air straight onto my ears. The new one is great, with the dumb little brim and ear covers. It also curves up in the back, which is great for cycling. It’s meant to wear under a helmet, but mine is too tight without the beanie, so I’ll need to get a bigger one at some point. There is only one size of this beanie, and it is pretty tight on me, and I don’t have a giant noggin.

I bought the Rockbros winter riding pants a few weeks back, and I love them, down to about 40 degrees F. They’re like super comfy sweatpants. I normally wear a large, and it was recommended to buy an XL size, so I did, and they fit very well. I’m a short guy, and the length is perfect. I think someone taller than like 5’8 would be disappointed in their size.

I did ride today, with the new beanie, and I was comfortable riding twice as long as I was with the other one I had. We had some major winds, and I was much more comfortable than before. I am looking forward to a new helmet though, because in the worst winds, the ear flaps did kind of flutter. The chin strap will solve that issue.

One negative I did realize about 50 minutes into my ride, is that the beanie doesn’t breathe at all. My head was just all mushy with sweat. The material does a great job of insulating, but not great of wicking sweat away. A benefit however, is that the beanie is black, so it warms up in direct sunlight, which felt so great while riding in the wind.

  1. Sounds like you’re getting it dialed.

One thought. If you’re a skier, I recommend on very cold days just wearing your ski helmet. I do this and it works like a charm. Never get cold ears even riding in single digits.

  2. I wear a ski helmet when it goes well below freezing. Those helmets are made for hits at higher speed than I’ll ever get to in winter. Ski helmets often have associated goggles that cover a lot more area than bike glasses. A light liner under this in very cold weather keeps you warm. Super cold and a balaclava mask gets donned. Note – I grow a beard for winter to cover lower face. Keeps balaclava away until much lower temps.
