New Pivot Les Fat or used Otso Voytek?

Posted asking about fatbikes earlier, which you can find [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/fatbike/comments/1691vyy/is_there_any_reason_for_me_to_get_a_fatbike_as_a/) for additional context.

I can get a new Pivot Les Fat with the Manitou Mastodon on sale for $3050 plus tax from my local bike shop, or I can get a used 2020 Otso Voytek for $2100. The Voytek’s specc’d with an XT 1×11 drivetrain, carbon cranks, carbon seatpost, Lithic alloy wheels with DT Swiss 350 hubs, and XT brakes. The Pivot’s specs are [here](https://global.pivotcycles.com/products/les-fat#anchor-bike-builder)

I’m really torn on which of these is a better buy. Personally, I’d be more comfortable spending $2000ish rather than $3000ish, but I could technically afford both. I have a set of HED Big Deal 26″ carbon wheels which I’d be using for either bike, regardless of what I get. The main thing I’m wondering is this: Is the Pivot worth spending the extra $1k on for the Mastodon and for the newer drivetrain, given my intended usecase? I plan to use it mostly for winter riding on groomed singletrack or trails; not so much for spring/summer/fall, as I have a full suspension e-bike for that. I do like the idea of having a suspension fork, but I don’t know if it’s super necessary. I also like the idea of having a new bike, but spending that extra $1k is pretty tough to justify. What do you guys think?

  1. The two bikes you’re considering have two different sizes of rear hub spacing. If you already have a set of wheels you’re planning to use, you should probably check if they’re 177 or 197 rear hubs, and use that to decide which bike to buy. OTSO uses 177 rear spacing IIRC, while Pivot uses the more common 197. Both are fantastic bikes, but it’s kinda like iPhone or Android – you’re buying into an ecosystem.

  2. I’d jump on that voytek in a second if it is in good shape. Especially if you want to ride groomed trails and don’t need 26×5.0 tires. Xt 11 speed is fantastic as are dt hubs and its considered a really special bike due to the incredible narrow q factor (183 mm vs 210 mm for the pivot).

Look at the tires both come with as well as fat tires are expensive and people don’t love the maxis on the pivot.
